The taper has given me back some time to live, so I used that time to hit the thrift store trail. I found my son's Halloween costume (new, Target reject from last year, $2.50) and the red balancing disk (used, $1.99).
My son had been asking me all week if he could wrap himself in toilet paper for Halloween, so when I found this costume, I had to get it. I was not a fan of having him leave a trail of toilet paper bits behind him all Halloween night.
I've never seen one of those red disks before now, but it reminded me of a bosu ball. My plan is to use it for balance moves, like standing on one leg, that will help strengthen the stabilizer muscles in my feet, ankles, and legs. Then the twins will hopefully have less chance of spraining my ankle during my taper. Bonus: my kids have been "exercising" with it nonstop since I purchased it.
And even though today is the day to start taking down Halloween decorations, I can't let go just yet. We spent last night as Liz Lemon and Jack Donaghy from 30 Rock.
I need shorter and even poofier hair, but I tried to tease it. I even used hairspray for the first time since our wedding -- twelve years ago. My husband didn't even have to change clothes. He just came home from work, combed his hair back, and talked about Don Geiss all night.
Before we partied it up, we made mummies for dinner.
But now to the important part of this post. With this week's crazy weather, I've been thinking about how we all adapt to the weather our regions have to offer. I saw lots of posts during Sandy about "crazy" runners trying to fit in runs with storms bearing down on them. We're obviously not crazy (although some of you are certified maniacs), just dedicated to being ready for our next race or moving forward with fitness and life. If you run, you live. At least that's how I feel.
So as a tribute to those living in much colder climates than me, I'm giving away these Due North everyday traction aids for ice and snow. So you can keep living even when the weather is fighting against you.
From the company:
The versatile Due North® Everyday Traction Aids are ideal for outdoor winter activities that require urban and light-duty casual, dress and athletic footwear. Whether you're shoveling the sidewalk, walking the dog or just running errands, the lightweight yet durable design of these Traction Aids will give you the confidence you need when walking or running on icy and snowy conditions. The webbed sole design allows the Due North® Everyday Traction Aid to adapt to the shape of your shoe, working with almost any style of shoe in your closet, and its low profile fit means it's nearly invisible to the eye. When not in use, the compact design makes them easy to store in small places such as, your coat pocket, handbag, briefcase or the glove box in your car.If you are interested in purchasing them, you can buy them here
This giveaway is for a size small/medium that fits women's shoe sizes 5-9 and men's shoe sizes 3-7.

I'll pick a winner on Monday, November 5th, after my race.
I run outside in whatever weather central Jersey has to offer. I need grips to keep me upright on ice. BTW-- Ran the MCM in pre-hurricane Sandy on Sunday. Not crazy, just determined.
ReplyDeleteWow, I saw the pictures of that windiness at MCM. How did it go?
DeleteSlower than I'd hoped, but "paced" my sister, a first-timer. Looking for a "redemption race" so as to take advantage of my current fitness.
DeleteAnd I already follow you on Facebook.
ReplyDeleteAnd I'll pass along the info to my running siblings since I refuse to embrace "tweeting."
ReplyDeleteBTW-- good luck on your race.
"If you run, you live." I'm not sure I heard of anything better. One thing that is so inspiring is how hard so many runners work at improving and beating a personal best!
ReplyDeleteI hope your son had a fun halloween!
Ice underneath the snow is the condition I'm most afraid of in the winter (maybe because I tripped on a patch last year). Although last winter was a mild one, I'll still get out there and run in any kind of weather!

ReplyDeleteOMG - Liz LEMON! I'm so stealing that the day I actually need to put on a costume. Love it.
ReplyDeleteDo it!
DeleteNot entering contest but had to comment: You guys looks awesome! I just finished watching the first 6 seasons of 30 Rock. I am a little behind on life and important cultural things. Loved it...probably cause I am a lot like Liz Lemon (or so my husband keeps mentioning). I just bought some of the traction things. Planning my mid winter marathon training runs:). Love my treadmill but eventually I have to be let loose outside;).
ReplyDeleteI was asking my friend what facial expressions I should do if I'm trying to be Liz Lemon, and she said that I should just be myself. So I guess we're triplets with Liz.
DeleteIts mostly pretty awesome here weather wise but the inlaws live in Yosemite and every xmas I slip and fall like a moron. I need to run because I need to get out but I have no hand eye and mixed with the ice slam BAM goes the Karen.
ReplyDeleteI'm in Wisconsin...Ice all the way.

ReplyDeleteYeah I already like you a lot :) on Facebook
ReplyDeleteMy weather is snowy and cold in the winter. I usually head to the treadmill when it's like that but these little gadgets look a lot more fun then being on the treadmill.
ReplyDeleteI"m not a twitterer or a google friend connect thingy. So I guess I can't follow either of those.
ReplyDeleteTarget never disappoints, lol. And that's awesome the red disk can serve as a faux-bosu ball too...I told my husband I wanted a bosu ball and a treadmill and I would quit the gym, lol...he likes that idea because at least he'd see me more if I ran on the mill at the house, lol. You and the hubster are too adorable for words! I ran outside, went to another gym while mine didn't have power, and got all my workouts in during Sandy...not crazy, just dedication, lol. ;) Happy Friday girl!
ReplyDeleteWind gets me. I live in Kansas, where it is often crazy, crazy windy. I can handle extreme temps, but wind sends me to the treadmill.
ReplyDeleteI follow you.

ReplyDeleteIt is usually this Alabama heat that I find the worst, but I'm moving to NY next summer so these would be great!

ReplyDeleteNorthern Minnesota is cold, windy, icy, and snowy in the winter! My city is super hilly and the sidewalks are icy so I need those grips :)

ReplyDeleteAlso, I love the 30 rock costumes and your son's costume is a much better alternative to toilet paper :)
ReplyDeleteThis is NOT an entry because I can't justify those ice hooks in the Arctic depths of the Bay Area...but I LOVE your Halloween costumes!!! Great work.
ReplyDeleteI refuse to run outside is when it's icy or when it's below 15 degrees. Other than that, I'm game. I would use the heck out of those traction aids!
ReplyDeleteI don't run but girl, I'm loving your Halloween costumes! The day I start running, I will enter your giveaways! Love!
ReplyDeleteOh and the weather in FL has been MEGA AWESOME! Miss you.
ReplyDeleteYou are cracking me up!
